Black Dance Focus on You + Black Dance United Auditions

The Black Dance Focus on You Panel Discussions and Black Dance United Auditions are to provide Black dancers and choreographers of Chicago an opportunity to receive resources needed to grow and strengthen their careers. Dancers will have an opportunity to audition for the multiple Black Dance companies for access to performance, workshop, or intensive opportunities. Black Dance Focus on You will include two panel/workshops designed to prepare dancers for the upcoming auditions a long with resources/workshops for choreographers who want to advance their careers. All events will be held virtually via Zoom. These virtual events will take place over the course of three weeks.


Panel I Dancer: Stay Ready

Panel II Choreographers: Booked & Busy

May 19th, 2021 – 7:45-8:45 PM

Join this panel of esteemed choreographers as they share their experiences on dance making and building relationships in the field to support their choreographic journey. From choreographic commissions to running a dance company, come learn how these artists make it happen!

All events will be held virtually via Zoom.


Black Dance United Auditions

May 26th, 2021 - 6:00p-9:30p

June 2, 2021 - 6:00p-9:30p


FOR DANCERS: To participate in the auditions, dancers must register in advance. Each audition day will have two sessions. Each session will include 3 phrases covering 3 different styles/genres (Commercial, Concert, Traditional). Dancers will learn each phrase in their respective Zoom Breakout Room for 15 minutes before learning another phrase. Once all phrases have been taught, participants will audition for the companies and choreographers present for each session. Each session can facilitate up to 30 dancers, for an opportunity to see 120 dancers over the course of the two auditions.


FOR COMPANY REPS/CHOREOGRAPHERS: Each company/choreographer must register to participate. They may participate in as many sessions as they are available. Companies may only have up to 2 representatives present per session. Companies/choreographers must disclose in advance what opportunities they are auditioning for (ie. company positions, performers for a specific show,
